What Nail Fungus Treatment Actually Works?

Nail fungus can be a particularly disfiguring and embarrassing condition. This condition is not normally painful, but it can make it difficult to live a normal life because going to the beach, wearing sandals or visiting a public swimming pool are all restricted. The worst thing about nail fungus is that it is extremely difficult to get rid it, but with the right nail fungus treatment you can eliminate it.

First, what causes nail fungus? It is right in the name of the condition. Nail fungus is caused by fungal spores attaching itself to your nails - usually your toenails, but in some rare cases, fingernails. The problem is that by itself the fungus doesn't do much, but when you give it the right conditions, it will grow quickly and be extremely hard to kill.

Unfortunately, the right conditions happen to be in your shoes, particularly if you tend to wear your tennis shoes without socks. When you wear shoes, even with socks, you sweat and create a moist and warm, dark environment that is perfect for the growth of this fungus.

It is rare to find cases of toenail fungus in countries where people cannot afford shoes, or almost always wear some kind of open toed sandal, or with people who choose to go barefooted as a lifestyle choice. This is because their feet are almost always dry, and exposed to the light, which does not allow the fungus to grow and actually kills it.

You will have a very hard time getting rid of your toenail fungus once you have it. However, it is not impossible. You need to start with the prevention measures already listed. First, try to go barefoot as much as possible, and don't trap your feet inside of shoes. Also, change your socks daily and make sure that they are dry. Dry your feet after a shower and never wear shoes without socks.

Besides all of the precautions listed above, you will also need to get ahold of some tineacide, which is about ten dollars in any drug or department store. This medicine will kill the fungus, but it will take several weeks or months or applying it daily or even twice daily. The medicine may have a slightly different name, but the active ingredient should be tineacide.

While you are applying the tineacide and taking other precautions, you must also trim your nails, because otherwise the fungus will cause them to curl inward, which can eventually form a very tight roll of nail that will be almost impossible to stop and straighten out again without major surgery, and the nail can grow towards the skin and cause a very painful condition called an ingrown toenail.

Last, you must file your nails to make a successful go at the nail fungus treatment described. Filing them along the top where the fungus is will make it difficult for the fungal infection to grow.
